On October 4th, 2024, third-year Engineering Geology students from the College of Science and Technology (CST) visited the National Soil Services Centre as part of their industrial tour.  The visit aimed to enhance their understanding of how crucial soil data and information are for engineering geologists in making informed decisions. It also provided insights into how soil test results assist engineers in evaluating ground conditions and designing suitable foundations and structures.

The students were welcomed by the Program Director, who provided an overview of the Centre’s core functions and highlighted the crucial role soil plays in agriculture and environmental sustainability.

The students then attended a presentation by the Program Head of the Soil Survey Program, titled “Understanding Soil, its Importance, and Mapping the Soils of Bhutan.” The presentation covered essential topics, including soil composition and properties, and emphasized the importance of soil surveys in agriculture and other allied fields. It also explored the technologies used in soil surveys, including digital mapping techniques, and discussed Bhutan’s various soil types.

After the presentation, the students participated in a Q & A session, where the students posed questions about the use of soil information in their field of study and other soil related issues. After this the students were taken on a guided tour of the soil museum, where they could observe various soil profiles from across Bhutan. The museum showcased samples of different soil types along with detailed explanations of their characteristics.

The tour continued to the  Soil and Plant Analytical Laboratory (SPAL), where the students had the opportunity to witness soil testing in action. Lab technicians demonstrated various methods used to analyze soil chemical properties.
