Rice is Bhutan’s most important staple food, central to both livelihoods and food security. To boost productivity, the Department of Agriculture (DoA) has prioritized increasing paddy yields as one of its key performance indicators (KPIs). Supporting this initiative, the National Soil Services Centre (NSSC) has launched large scale demonstrations on improved nutrient management.

The program covers 54 acres of paddy land under chain-link fencing and an additional 20 acres outside the fenced area at Sang-nga-choeling Gewog, Samtse. Farmers were trained on the objectives, benefits, and proper methods of nutrient application. Soil tests were conducted prior to cultivation, and site specific recommendations were provided. The NSSC, in collaboration with the Dzongkhag Agriculture Section, Samtse Dzongkhag, is implementing the program.

Early results show clear differences – demonstration fields are greener, healthier, and show better growth than untreated fields. Farmers have also reported improved growth compared to previous seasons. The program is ongoing.
