Two teams from the Soil Survey Program under the National Soil Services Center have begun conducting soil surveys in Haa and Paro Dzongkhags starting 19th August 2025.
The activity is supported by the Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (AFACI) through the project titled “National Soil Information Systems to Support the Transformation of Agrifood Systems in AFACI Countries.”
As part of the project, soil data is being collected from cultivated lands. The primary objective of this survey is to update Bhutan’s national soil property maps, which was first developed through reconnaissance soil surveys carried out between 2019 and 2023.
The ultimate goal is to establish a National Soil Information System that will strengthen our understanding of Bhutan’s soil resources. This knowledge will support sustainable agricultural practices and guide evidence based decision making in the agrifood sector.
