A team of four officials from the Soil Survey Program under the National Soil Services Center (NSSC) has begun collecting soil data through reconnaissance soil surveys in Gasa and Punakha Dzongkhags starting from 6 October 2025. The team plans to collect 95 soil samples from soil profile pits and auger boreholes in cultivated areas.
This activity is supported by the Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (AFACI) under the project titled “National Soil Information Systems to Support the Transformation of Agrifood Systems in AFACI Countries.”
The main objective of the survey is to update Bhutan’s national soil property maps, initially developed through reconnaissance soil surveys conducted between 2019 and 2023, and to establish a National Soil Information System (NSIS). This system will enhance understanding of Bhutan’s soil resources, support sustainable agricultural practices, and guide evidence-based decision-making in the agrifood sector.
